Early
breeding records
Prior
to about 1980, the productive breeding of caiques was a fairly rare event. Here
are some published records of breeding successes prior to that time. The
earliest accepted breeding success is attributed to Gilbert Lee in the
United States in 1949. I am discounting the report by
Hopkinson of the breeding of a pair of “black-headed” parrots in about 1927
in the Primley Zoo. Although I have kept it in the list, I suspect this breeding
was probably that of a pair of “black-headed” conures.

a
Hopkinson
states “A pair of Black-Headed have young in the nest.” I suspect this
refers to conures, but am uncertain.
b
Mrs. Williams was
able to breed her birds for several years subsequent to her first success.
c
No breeding activity was reported for 1959 through 1962 and for 1974 through
1976 in the Internal. Zoo Yearbook. The Yearbook was first published in 1959. It
seems likely that the date of the breeding is the prior year.
d
Number in parentheses indicates number of chicks that died.
e
This pair of pallids produced young every year from 1972 through 1977 except
1975.
f
The listing does not state if this is the number of producing pairs or the
number of chicks produced.
