2. Is a parrot right for you?

There are some basic questions you should ask yourself before considering a pet of any kind. The first is do you have any health problem that would preclude you having that pet? The second is whether you can commit to caring for an animal that will be totally dependent on you? A third, is how tolerant are you and your neighbors of the noises that caiques make? If you cannot answer these questions in a positive way, you should consider buying a plant, not a parrot.

Your health, or the health of other persons in your household should be a major consideration. If you tend to have allergies, it is very likely you will develop them toward your parrot. While a caique would be a better choice than say cockatoo, that produces a powder like dander, they still can elicit a strong allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.

As to care, parrots like mammalian pets, need to be cared for every day. If you like to take off on frequent or extended vacations, or must travel on business and leave them for long periods without care, it is probably not a good idea to own a parrot. Parrots are creatures of routine; they like to know what to expect every day. Neglecting them, especially a single pet bird, may cause serious psychological harm.

Finally, if you or persons who live with or near have a low noise tolerance, think carefully before purchasing any parrot. In general, larger parrots make more noise. While caiques are not considered to be exceptionally noisy, they still create noise, particularly during the morning and evening call times. This may be a particular problem for apartment dwellers.
