The Caique Manual Back to Hazards to Human Health
20. Potty training. Many parrots can be potty trained. Dr. Smith recommends the following procedure for caiques. Caiques have two practices that aid you in training. First, if your caique is a healthy adult, it will never defecate in its roost box, this means they have a great deal of control over their bowels. Second, just before a caique defecates it squats and waggles it tail. You can use these characteristics to potty train your bird. First, you must decide upon a stimulus to use to get the bird to eliminate, for example, a newspaper or receptacle such as a trash bin. Then, the first thing in the morning after you remove the bird from the cage or any other time you remove the bird from the cage, while the bird is still on your hand, provide the paper or chosen receptacle for the bird to defecate onto. Accompany this with a word or other signal such as "Potty." It is very important to say the word so the bird will be able to associate it with the need to defecate. Later when you notice the bird is indicating it is going to defecate, say the word and offer the same receptacle. Immediately after the bird is finished reward it with a caress or treat. The bird should soon learn to do its "potty" on command. If you have not clipped your bird's wings, it can be trained to fly to its "potty" when its needs to defecate. I wish success if you decide to potty train your bird.
